Trigger warning - misscarriage, baby loss, infant death.

With knit in public day coming up next weekend, I thought I would share the microprem/angel baby wraps we are going to be making at my local library.  Along with a teddy bears, smaller angel baby wraps I have been knitting for SANDS NZ. In this article I also explain what a microprem/angel baby is and about SANDS NZ

What are microprem/angel babies?

A baby born before or at 26 weeks of pregnancy.  Microprem babies spend a long time in NICU since they are born so early.  Microprem babies that sadly don't make it are called angel babies. These angel baby wraps below have a hood for babies born about 20weeks old.

What is SANDS NZ?

SANDS is a charity that supports parents and family members who have experienced the death of a baby.  It is run by a network of parent non-profit groups to support parents and family they are not government funded and they have no paid staff.  They offer understanding and empathy in a way that is not judgmental.  They share their personal experiences and promote awareness, support and understanding.

Why did I choose to knit for microprem/angel babies?

For at lot of reasons why I choose to knit for microprem/angel babies but mainly so parents had something to wrap their little babies in since they are so tiny.

Microprem/angel baby wraps and teddy bears

Here are a few more of the microprem/angel baby wraps I have made. They are both knitted on straight needles folded into 3rds and the left side is stitched to the bottom. On the very small wraps the top is folded down like a collar on a jumper.  These ones are knitted for microprem/angel babies born at 16 weeks for can find Lisa's Stars pattern here angel wrap pattern

These little teddybears are made in twos - one for the microprem/ angel baby and one for the parents of the baby to keep in a keepsake box or something similar.  To make these I used Lisa's stars Teddy bear pattern are knitted on straight needles in one piece, the legs are knitted separately and then joined together before the body is knitted.  They are folded in half and stitched up with stitching added to make the ears.
