Guide on how to do a stretchy cast off step by step

Are you wondering how to get a stretchy cast off?  It has become my go to cast off as I cast off too tightly and this saves grabbing another needle the next size up. This cast off is also perfect for cuffs, neckbands, sock cuffs and any other time your wanting a stretchy cast off. This post will show you how to do a stretchy cast off step by step guide.

What is a stretchy cast off?

In knitting when you've finished knitting you cast off to stop them from unraveling. The stretchy cast off is another way of casting off your knitting which makes the cast off edge stretchy but also bounces back to its shape eg. neckbands will stretch as much as the stretchy cast off gives but will bounce back to its shape.

The stretchy cast off is perfect for:
  • Sock cuffs
  • Neck bands on jumpers
  • Leg warmers
  • Cuffs on jumper
  • Those who cast off too tightly (like me)

How to do a stretchy cast off?

This stretchy cast off is done by knitting two stitches together and slipping the stitch back to the needle you knitted it from (if your left handed this is the right needle and if your right handed this is the left hand needle). Then it is knitted again with another stitch so each stitch ends up by being knitted twice except the last stitch on the needle. It sounds complicated but it's not, here are the steps:

1. Knit two stitches together.

2. Slip the stitch back on to the left hand needle.

3. The stitch should look like this once it has been slipped back onto the left hand needle.

4. Repeat step 1-3 until all stitches have been cast off, please note the last stitch does not get knitted twice.

5.Cut the yarn and thread through the remaining stitches and the stretchy cast off edge should look like this:

Is this a good cast off to use for a shawl? Thanks so much!

Hi Cynthia,

Yes you could use this for a shawl, if you cast off tightly it would be quite good to use to make sure the edging isn't too tight.
