What's that stitch - stamen stitch

Welcome to what's that stitch series! Stamen stitch is also called honey comb stitch which has quite a sturdy stitch that does not stretch easily.  It creates a texture that is just amazing with the detail in it and its so easy to knit!  It looks like little circles inside one another with dashes breaking them up.  Learn what this stitch is, how to do sand stitch and get few project ideas for using this stitch.

What is Stamen stitch?


Stamen stitch creates a sturdy thick texture that does not stretch easily.  It is an easy stitch to do and uses knit, purl and slip stitches - if you've never done slip stitches do not worry they are easier than any other stitch.  This stitch gives and amazing texture of little circles inside one another with dashes breaking them up.

How do you do stamen stitch?


To do stamen stitch you only need to know how to:

  • Knit
  • Purl
  • Slip a stitch

Knitting abbreviations and meanings


K - knit
P - purl
Sl 1 - slip 1 stitch
Purlwise - means to pick up the stitch as if you are going to purl it.

To do stamen stitch 

Cast on multiples of 2
Row 1: Knit
Row 2: *K1, sl 1 purlwise repeat from*, end with K2
Row 3: Knit
Row 4: K2, *Sl 1 purlwise, K1, repeat from*
Repeat these four rows

What can you make using stamen stitch?


Using stamen stitch you could knit a blanket, jumper, scarves, boot toppers, container or baskets. This stitch would be perfect for almost any cozy knit for winter because of its thick texture.

Any suggestion on how what stitches to use with the stamen stitch on the perimeter of an Afghan? Thanks, Sue

Hi Sue,

There is quite a few stitches that would look nice, moss stitch, seed stitch, stocking stitch, grating stitch, elm gain, garter ridge stitch and seed stitch simple. All of these use knit and purl stitches only except for elm grain which also uses yfd (yarn forward).
