Welcome to our new stitch series!
I have been so excited about starting the what's that stitch? series and sharing different knitting stitches. What's that stitch is a library of knitting stitches organised so you know which are the easiest to start with or which ones are more suitable to your knitting skills. Most knitting stitches are just a combination of knit and purl stitches so you really only need to know these ones to get started.
Each knitting stitch tutorial includes:
- Written instructions on how to do the stitch
- Instructions for knitting on the flat (straight needles).
- Instructions for knitting in the round (circular needles and double pointed needles) as these sometimes are not the same.
- Free printable guides for you to keep in a knitting journal, knitting book or you could keep them on a key ring.
- Photos of the finished stitch square.
- Close up photo of the stitch.
- A few project ideas so you can try out the knitting stitch on your own project.
Rib Stitches
Rib stitches create a stretchy fabric making it perfect for the cuffs on jumpers, socks, rim on beanies and are also sometimes used on scarves. Diagonal rib and Oblique rib both create a rib that is quite similar but the stitches used are slightly different, not to be confused as the same stitch.

- Beaded Rib
- Farrow Rib
- Pique Rib

- Oblique Rib
