book recommendations and reviews

Here are my book recommendations and reviews for July. I love to read and I've started keeping a list every month along with a reading journal.  There's a range of different novels crime, relationships, Christian, romance with different settings eg. country, Hollywood, India, San Francisco, Paris, airport, and Massachusetts.

[Start of image description for above: a photo of a grey throw with Arjaye holding a book called dangerous games by Danielle steel. On the photo is a white rectangle with the words "bookshelf". Under the photo is a sage green rectangle with two white stripes and the words "July book recommendations and reviews". End of image description.]

My Goodreads goal is to read 152 books, currently (as at end of July) I've read about 100. I set a goal to read 2 fiction books every week and 2 non-fiction books in a month. This month however I didn't read any non-fiction books.

Sapphire Falls by Fleur Mc Donald

⭐⭐⭐⭐stars

I loved this book set in a rural country side in southern Australia. Packed with suspense, mystery as the police carry out investigations and events thrown in. With a touch of romance too. As Fiona works through her grief of losing her husband, running their farm and being pregnant she follows her dream despite events and challenges she faces from an unknown person. Supportive friends, family help her through these tough times and a shocking revelation of her friend adds to the heartbreak she’s facing and a betrayal from someone she trusted.

The first book I’ve read by Fleur Mc Donald doesn’t disappoint. I love how there were no questions etc left to be answered at the end of the book. A well-written book, I’d recommend it to anyone looking for a perfect read for the weekend.

Neighbours by Danielle Steel

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ stars

Wow, this book was another great one by Danielle Steel! I’d highly recommend it to anyone

Meredith White was one of Hollywood’s most recognisable faces. But a personal tragedy cut her acting career short and alienated her from her family. For 15 years, Meredith was living alone in San Francisco with two trusted caretakers. Then, on a muggy late summer day, a massive earthquake strikes Northern California, plunging the Bay Area into chaos. Meredith White’s neighbours didn’t know she was living in the same street as them. Meredith kindly invites her stunned and shaken neighbours into her mostly undamaged home as the recovery of the earthquake begins.

I love how the tragedy of the earthquake bought such a different range of people together and formed relationships with the recluse, a doctor whose wife and children fear him, a young woman dating a dishonourable man, the aspiring writer caring for a famous blind musician.

Her two trusted caretakers aren’t that trustworthy at all. Thanks to the suspicions and the dogged detective work of a disaster relief volunteer, a former military officer named Charles, the shocking truth is exposed and no one saw the events would unfold eventually.

Sometimes events in life bring out the best in people but sometimes they also bring out the worst in people too. Full of unforgettable characters for their own different reasons, stunning twists and turns of events along the way. Throughout it all, it shows how love, acts of kindness and a lot of courage can change things in someone’s life and be life-changing!

Under the harvest moon by Beth Wiseman

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ stars

It is such a great book, I loved this book!

It is an autumn harvest novella full of love, pain, heartache, hope, faith and learning to let go of the past and moving forward with life.  Naomi's abusive husband passes on leaving her with a baby on the way and the harvest to do. No one knew of the baby yet, as she'd lost one she understandably wanted to wait a while before she shared the news. Her father's Englisher friend Brock has been hired to help with the harvest they soon become friends.  Naomi's neighbour plants fear in her about her unborn baby and the full moon.  Naomi doesn't know how can she ever trust another man?

God's love and care for His children shine throughout this novel.

Mischief in the autumn air by Vannetta Chapman

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ stars

I loved this book, it’s the first book of by Vannetta Chapman I’ve read. It’s an autumn harvest novella. I loved the mystery around the items at the auction house which start going above market value. Eli Wittmerand his new bookkeeper, Martha Beiler track down a trail of clues on an adventure to solve the mystery it was soo good. I’d recommend it to anyone who loves Amish, Christian books.

Accidental Heroes by Danielle Steel

⭐⭐⭐ 3 stars

Another great book by Danielle Steel. I didn’t like how the Arab couple were portrayed at the start just based upon their race, with racism. Detailed about each of the pilots and their lives. Suspense about what will happen next and if it’s a random thing the attendant shouldn’t be worried about. A tragic turn of events...

You can find the large print book here

Turning Point by Danielle Steel

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐stars

This was such a good book about four different exceptional doctors who were chosen for an honor and a unique project. Which is to visit and to work with their counterparts in Paris in a trauma unit training program where they gain invaluable knowledge from the program.

Dr 1 is Bill Browning heads the trauma unit at San Francisco's busiest emergency room, SF General. With his ex-wife and daughters in London, he immerses himself in his work and lives for rare visits with his children.

Dr 2 is A rising star at her teaching hospital, UCSF at Mission Bay, Stephanie Lawrence has two young sons, a frustrated stay-at-home husband who doesn’t want her to go. She doesn’t seem to have enough time for any of them.

Dr 3. Harvard-educated Wendy Jones is a dedicated trauma doctor at Stanford, trapped in a dead-end relationship with a married cardiac surgeon.

Dr 4. Tom Wylie's popularity with women rivals the superb medical skills he employs at his Oakland medical center, but he refuses to let anyone get too close, determined to remain unattached forever.

That visit ends up resulting in an unexpected event with all of the drs pitching into help where they can. Their life in Paris becomes a stark turning point, it’s soon time to face harder choices than they have ever made before. I loved how it told the stories of all of the American Drs about their lives before going to Paris and their lives after both the visit from the drs in Paris afterwards. I’d recommend it to anyone who loves books with a bit of romance and unexpected turns of events.

The Ministry of Utmost Happiness by Arundhati Roy

⭐⭐ stars

I’d heard this book was really good and I really wanted to enjoy it. I liked the story but I found it so hard to follow the timeline of events, the story moved quickly she was a child and all of a sudden an adult a name change and I just couldn’t follow what was happening etc.

Unsure if others found the book like this too. I have dyslexia and reading comprehension problems which makes it hard to understand stories at times.

Dangerous Games by Danielle Steel

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ stars

I loved the different places and stories they covered together. Fast paced, action packed and one heck of a story with corruption lies random twists and suspense. Out from the darkness comes light, rebuilding of lives and relationships. I never expected it to turn out the way it did just wow!

Another great book by Danielle Steel it was so hard to put down I read it in 2 days it was soo good!

Destination Unknown by Amy Clipston (Roadside Assistance #2)

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ stars

I quite enjoyed this book, though I felt sorry for Whitney her mum was so controlling from choosing her friends, University, her hair etc. While Whitney was rebellious I think quite a few teenagers go through that too. A great book about growing up the challenges of finding who you are, not feeling like you fit in where you once did fit along with all the decisions you have to make before leaving high school.

The Wedding Dress by Danielle Steel

⭐⭐⭐⭐ stars

I enjoyed this book a great story of the wedding dress through the different generations.

A wedding dress belonged to Eleanor who first picks her wedding dress in Paris with her mother. Eleanor marries Alex just before things in the world change and their wealth changes within such a short time. Over the years they rebuild their lives from being poor back to being wealthy again through tragic events, resilience and heartbreak. Over the years Eleanor keeps the dress and when she had her daughter she was so glad she’d kept it. Eleanor's granddaughter wears the wedding dress her on her wedding day and all of Elenanor's wedding memories come back as she celebrates her granddaughter's wedding years later. I’d recommend it to anyone who loves historical events, historical fiction and heirlooms.

Beauchamp Hall by ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐stars

Winnie gets DVDs at the office Christmas party about Beauchamp hall and loved it. When her life changes completely within a day with a turn of events she never saw coming. She decides to take the trip of a lifetime which seems a little crazy to her family but she goes and accomplished what she set out to do. She ends up landing on her feet, finding herself a few jobs along the way, a new place to live and starts a new chapter in her life.

A great book about following your dreams even if they seem wild and crazy because you never know what will happen next. I’d recommend it to anyone, it's so captivating.
