The simple stocking stitch scarf was the first pattern I designed after I learnt how to do purl stitches and after I learnt that stocking stitch would roll up if it didn't have a border. The scarf was inspired by walks through the Botanical Gardens in Auckland with family members, when I went to visit them and started knitting again sitting out in their garden reminded me of this memory when I was a child.

Update
This pattern was designed before this website was started, first published on 22nd June 2018 and edited in September 2020, even though it's been updated it will remain free. Please consider leaving me a ko-fi tip for the pattern if you are able to - money goes towards getting this pattern professionally tech edited.
Edited to add:
- Better quality photos -the original remains but as I gave to charity I'm unable to re-photograph the scarf but I have knitted another one.
- Added yardage/meters of the yarn (previously it was knitted in $2 shop yarn that did not have the yardage/meres)
- Change the layout of the pattern since I've learnt a lot since joining Swatch Studio by Francoise at Aroha Knits
- Change the pattern so it better reflects my current designs and everything I have learnt
- Added links to tutorials
- How to cast on
- How to cast off
- How to do stocking stitch

Simple garden scarf pattern story
The garter stitch boarder and stocking stitch symbolises the paths throughout the Botanical Garden in Auckland. The gardens are free to walk through, when I was younger I'd go with family there at different times of the year to see the changes in the garden. It was one of our favourite places to go and we would also have morning tea there too. My favourite time of the year to go there was spring when all the flowers were blooming. The variegated yarn I choose for the beautiful colours to represent of all of the flowers in the garden. The garden opened in 1982 and is 64 hectares 10 of which is native forest, it is lovely walk through there when I am well enough to walk through it I want to take my children there too.
This pattern was the first I designed while I was visiting the family members I'd walk through the garden with and walking through their little garden and having morning tea there reminded me of this memory from when I was little.

Simple stocking stitch scarf
Cast on 45 stitchesKnit four rows
Right Side: Knit across the row
Wrong Side: Knit 4, purl until the last 4 stitches, knit the last 4 stitches
Repeat until 40 inches or nearly desired length
Knit four rows
Cast off and thread the ends in.
Add tassels if you would like or you can leave these off.
Making tassels (optional):
Make tassels by cutting 3 strands 13 inches long, repeat so you have 13 tassels. On the wrong side put the crochet hook through the last row. Hold the ends of the 3 strands to make a loop and hold the other end. Put the loop on the crochet hook and pull through pulling tight. Put a tassel at each end of the cast on row and space them out evenly about 3/4 inch apart. It doesn't matter if it isn't exact. Repeat for the cast off edge.
