What's that stitch? Pique triangle stitch

Welcome to what's that stitch series! Pique triangle stitch creates raised triangles giving a 3D texture and this stitch only uses knit and purl stitches.  Learn what this stitch is, how to do pique triangle stitch and a get few project ideas for using this stitch.




What is pique triangle stitch?


Pique triangle stitch creates raised triangles using purl and knit stitches to give it a 3D texture.  The triangles are knitted on a stocking stitch background which really shows off the texture of the triangles.



What does pique triangle stitch look like?


The photo below shows a close up photo of pique triangle stitch and the 3D texture it gives.  While the triangles are knitted with a stocking stitch background it doesn't curl up at all as shown in the second photo below, unlike stocking stitch which would just roll up.

How do you do pique triangle stitch?


To do pique triangle stitch you only need to know how to:



  • Knit
  • purl

How to do pique triangle stitch

Cast on multiples of twelve

Row 1: * K6, P1, K5, repeat from *

Row 2: * P4, K3, P5, repeat from *

Row 3: * K4, P5, K3, repeat from *

Row 4: * P2, K7, P3, repeat from *

Row 5: *K2, P9, K1, repeat from *

Row 6: Purl along the whole row

Row 7: *P1, K11, repeat from *

Row 8: *K1, P9, K2, repeat from *

Row 9: *p3, K7, P2, repeat from *

Row 10: *K3, P5, K4, repeat from *

Row 11: * P5, K3, P4, repeat from *

Row 12: Purl along the whole row

Repeat rows 1-12 to continue knitting pique triangle stitch

I am making a patchwork blanket using all of the squares from the what's that stitch, below is the new knitted pique triangle stitch square for my blanket - you could also make a pot holder instead just use cotton yarn.

What can you make using pique triangle stitch?



Using this stitch you could knit a scarf, cushion cover, beanie, pot holder, blanket, it would look lovely on a jumper or cardi.
